Community Spotlight: Chagrin Falls

The scenic village of Chagrin Falls, Ohio is situated at the edge of Cuyahoga County, just 40 minutes from downtown Cleveland. Named for the beautiful waterfall at the town center, Chagrin Falls is well-known to Northeast Ohioans for its historic architecture, abundance of fascinating shops and restaurants, and thriving arts community.
Chagrin Falls was founded in the mid-19th century by settlers of Connecticut’s Western Reserve. Some of the village’s churches that still stand today, such as the Methodist Church on Franklin Street, date back to this time period. The falls brought rapid growth to the village, with many businesses such as paper mills, flour mills, and a foundry opening around it. In 1844, the village of Chagrin Falls was incorporated.
Today, the Chagrin Falls population is approximately 4,101 residents (2017) in just over 2.1 square miles. It is a popular community for families, and living close to downtown is highly desirable among residents and buyers searching for their new home. The city’s historic homes range from detailed brick colonials to stunning Victorian and Gothic Revival style homes, several of which are on the National Register of Historic Places. Chagrin Falls real estate also comprises gorgeous single-family homes with scenic, wooded backyards as well as newer construction townhomes.
There are plenty of things to do in Chagrin Falls such as shopping and dining downtown, especially along Main Street and Franklin Street. Residents and visitors can enjoy an abundance of antique stores and art galleries as well as popular shops such as Fireside Bookshop, Village Herb Shop, and Chagrin Fine Jewelry. Numerous restaurants and coffee shops line the streets of Chagrin Falls, some of the local favorites being Lemon Falls Cafe/Marketplace, Paris Room, Hunan by the Falls, and the wildly popular Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
On top of the village’s numerous art galleries, residents can also enjoy community theater performances at the Chagrin Valley Little Theater, visit the Chagrin Falls Historical Society, or view art exhibits and take classes at the Valley Art Center. Each summer during the second weekend in June, thousands of people flock to the Art by the Falls festival, an outdoor fine arts and crafts festival hosted by the Valley Art Center. Visitors can stroll through the festival to view and purchase art from over one hundred national artists.
Residents can also enjoy walks and outdoor activities in Riverside Park and the Chagrin Falls Triangle Park, as well as the South Chagrin Reservation right outside of town.
